Melinda French Gates, Mitgründerin der Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will die Stiftung verlassen und künftig eigene philanthropische Wege gehen. Wie Tania Karas vom Devex Newswire berichtet, soll die Ex-Ehefrau des Microsoft-Gründers Bill Gates als Bestandteil des Trennungsabkommens weitere 12,5 Milliarden US-Dollar für ihre Arbeit zugunsten von Frauen und Familien weltweit erhalten. Die Stiftung mit Sitz in Seattle im US-Bundesstaat Washington soll künftig schlicht "Gates Foundation" heißen.
“This is not a decision I came to lightly”, erklärte French Gates auf der Plattform X. “I am immensely proud of the foundation that Bill and I built together and of the extraordinary work it is doing to address inequities around the world.”
Der Vorstandsvorsitzende der Gates Stiftung, Mark Suzman, sagte, Melinda French Gates “made this decision, after considerable reflection, based on how she wants to spend the next chapter of her philanthropy.” “Melinda has new ideas about the role she wants to play in improving the lives of women and families in the U.S. and around the world (...). “And, after a difficult few years watching women’s rights rolled back in the U.S. and around the world, she wants to use this next chapter to focus specifically on altering that trajectory.”
Die Gates-Stiftung hat ihren Sitz in Seattle im US-Bundesstaat Washington und ist die weltgrößte wohltätige Stiftung. Sie verfügt über ein Endowment von 75,2 Milliarden US-Dollar und hat laut Devex seit ihrer Gründung rund 78 Mrd. Dollar an gemeinnützigen Zuschüssen vergeben. Aufgrund ihrer Finanzmacht ist die Arbeit der Gates Foundation, die beispielsweise auf nicht von Bauern reproduzierbares genmanipuliertes Saatgut setzt, sehr umstritten.
