Washington. - Eine zunehmende Zahl von Entwicklungsländern investiert in soziale Sicherheitsnetze, um das Leben von armen und besonders verletzlichen Menschen zu verbessern. Aber noch immer müssen 55 Prozent der Armen - rund 773 Millionen Menschen - ohne soziale Absicherung leben. Zu dem Ergebnis kommt ein Weltbank-Bericht, der am Dienstag in Washington veröffentlicht worden ist.

Geneva. - The most recent global estimates suggest some 120 million children between the ages of 5 and 14 are involved in child labour, with boys and girls in this age group almost equally affected. This persistence of child labour is rooted in poverty and lack of decent work for adults, lack of social protection, and a failure to ensure that all children are attending school through to the legal minimum age for admission to employment. Around 20 to 30 per cent of children in low income countries complete their schooling and enter the labour market by the age of 15, says a new International Labour Organization (ILO) report prepared for World Day against Child Labour. Most of these children were in child labour before.

Washington. - Between 2011 and 2014, 700 million people became account holders at banks, other financial institutions, or mobile money service providers, and the number of "unbanked" individuals dropped 20 percent to 2 billion adults, says a new report released Wednesday evening.

Brussels. - The extent of women's poverty in the EU, the impact of social exclusion through poverty on living and working conditions, and the impact of the crisis on female poverty is discussed by the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) during a workshop on Monday. The role of Member States and European policies and activities is analyzed as well. Recent findings emphasise the need for a holistic methodological approach and recommend gender mainstreaming of macroeconomic policy.

Berlin. - Im Vorfeld der SPD-Konferenz "Europäische Verantwortung in einer globalen Welt", die am Donnerstag in Berlin stattfindet, hat die Sprecherin der SPD-Arbeitsgruppe Wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung, Bärbel Kofler, erklärt, Armut und Ungleichheit müssten stärker bekämpft werden. "Wir wollen erörtern, wie das europäische Jahr der Entwicklung, die UN-Post-2015-Agenda und die Initiativen der SPD-Bundestagsfraktion dazu beitragen können, Armut und Ungleichheit zu reduzieren und 'Gute Arbeit' weltweit durchzusetzen", sagte sie am Mittwoch in Berlin.
