Chinese peacekeepers returned in December 2023 after completing their United Nations-led mission in Mali, as the international organisation ended its 10-year peacekeeping mission at the request of the Malian military junta. China seeks to avoid diplomatic entanglements with Western powers while protecting its economic and security interests. Beijing being involved in mediation was high where Chinese commercial interests were high.
