Eight Billion Lives MeetUp: Fighting Poverty
Tuesday, 6. September 2016, 18:30 - 21:00
Hits : 1908

Some say only business can end poverty. Others say the means that created the problems cannot solve the same. “We need a new paradigm!” some shout for. Buzzwords created. Trends emerge. Experiments run. Learnings take place. Entrepreneurship and Development work start to merge. The way poverty is tackled and it’s actors begin to change. The intention of this evening is to question and discuss the role of Social Entrepreneurship in fighting poverty as well as highlighting best- and worst practices.

The following questions will guide us through a diversified night: What is the role of Social Entrepreneurship in enabling the poor/disadvantaged and alleviating poverty? How can teaching / supporting entrepreneurship act as a powerful means to empower people to take charge of their own lives and create a sustainable living basis for themselves and for others? What is Women’s role in social entrepreneurship? What are challenges women face in becoming entrepreneurs? Why include women? How to include men in women’s projects?

Background on Fellowship Eight Billion Lives & MeetUp

In 2025, 8 billion people will populate our planet. How can cities cope with the stress arising from increasing urbanisation? How can food production and consumption become more sustainable and feed a world of 8 billion? How can digitalisation help to meet these challenges? To help answering these questions, Munich Re and Impact Hub Munich award the Fellowship “Eight Billion Lives”. Through the Fellowship, we support entrepreneurs that seek to improve future livelihoods in the face of population growth. We aim to enable social entrepreneurs in one of the following two fields: 1) Urbanisation and 2) Food production and consumption.

Eight Billion Lives MeetUp is a series of public events, developed within the frame of the Fellowship. The agenda of the events is inspired by the two challenges that are put in the focus of the program: Urbanisation and Food production and consumption.
