The digital transformation offers new opportunities for economic and social development worldwide. However, not all people benefit from its potentials equally: 200 million fewer women than men are online today. This presents challenges as access to the digital world is an increasingly critical requirement for economic and social participation. Promoting e-skills for women and girls across the world is thus an important priority for German development cooperation. Which competencies, skills, environments and support are needed for women and girls to be successful and self-confident netizens, entrepreneurs and co-creators of the digital age?

Three speakers will present their approaches for overcoming the gender digital divide and promoting an equal, gender-balanced digital world: Terry Reintke is member of the EU Parliament and responsible for the report on “Gender equality and empowering women in the digital age“. Iffat Rose Gill is the founder of ChunriChoupaal – The Code to Change, from Pakistan, campaigning for more female leaders in the digital world. Finally, Martha Chumo teaches women and girls how to code in the Nairobi Dev School, which she founded. They will be welcomed by Hans-Peter Baur, Head of Directorate for Democracy, Human Rights, Social Development and Digital World at BMZ.
