Berlin. - Mit Protestbannern und Kohleloren hat Greenpeace am Freitag vor dem Bundeswirtschaftsministerium in Berlin für die Einhaltung des deutschen Klimaschutzziels demonstriert. Wirtschaftsminister Sigmar Gabriel (SPD) traf sich dort mit den Energie- und Wirtschaftsministern der Bundesländer, um die von ihm vorgeschlagene Klimaschutzabgabe für alte Kohlekraftwerke zu diskutieren.
Berlin/Bonn. - Mit Unverständnis und heftiger Kritik haben Brot für die Welt, Germanwatch und MISEREOR auf den Widerstand aus Teilen von Politik, Unternehmen und Gewerkschaften gegen den Plan von Wirtschaftsminister Sigmar Gabriel (SPD) zur Begrenzung der Kohleverstromung reagiert. Die NGOs sprachen am Freitag von "Panikmache".
Tunis. - Leaders from the civil society organisations ActionAid, AWID, Civicus, Greenpeace and Oxfam published a joint call during the World Social Forum in Tunis (24-28 March).
Abuja. - The Presidential Elections in Nigeria on March 28th are the most contested in the country’s history. The spotlight will be on how the two main candidates in Africa’s largest democracy lead the country through high risks of political violence, questions around electoral credibility, and threats to the country´s unity. The two main Candidates are: President Goodluck Jonathan, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who has been in power for five years and has significant support in the Southern regions. And General Buhari, former military ruler, and now leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC). His support base is mainly from the north of the country. The election will be a rematch of the 2011 elections, which resulted in riots and violence.
Sana’a. - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Yemen, worried by the recent escalation of violence in the country, expressed concern on Thursday at reports of civilian casualties following air strikes in the capital Sana’a and other parts of the country. Ordinary Yemenis – already hit hard by years of conflict – are now enduring the effects of this escalation. "All parties involved in the current round of violence are bound by the rules governing the conduct of hostilities," said Cedric Schweizer, who heads the ICRC delegation in Yemen.
Freetown. - In Sierra Leone müssen alle sechs Millionen Einwohner drei Tage lang zu Hause bleiben. Mitarbeiter der Gesundheitsbehörden werden vom kommenden Freitag bis Sonntag von Haus zu Haus ziehen, um bislang nicht erfasste Todesfälle zu ermitteln. World Vision unterstützt diese Maßnahme als zwar drastischen, aber notwendigen Schritt im Kampf gegen Ebola. Das hat die Internationale Kinderhilfsorganisation am Donnerstag in Freetown verkündet.
